A spectacular car crash caused chaos in Deighton.

Two men ended up trapped in a Mercedes after it crashed and flipped on to its side on Keldregate during yesterday’s peak teatime period.

They were on their way back from a funeral when the accident happened.

Eyewitnesses told how the car – driven by a man in his 60s – clipped a parked car forcing his vehicle to flip on to its side, trapping both him and his passenger inside.

Fire crews and police were called to the scene just before 5.15pm yesterday.

Huddersfield Fire Watch commander Andy Flynn said: “When we arrived on scene the Mercedes was on its side and the two occupants were still in the car.

“After consulting with the ambulance service we removed the windscreen of the vehicle to allow them to get out safely.

“They suffered cuts and were shaken but otherwise uninjured.”

Asked how the crash happened he added: “It would appear the vehicle was travelling at low speed when it clipped a parked car and was forced onto its side.

“They are lucky the car did not go on to its roof but they are pretty robust cars.”

Witness Diane Stewart said: “I was driving home and I saw the car on its side. A woman was helping people in the car so I started helping to direct the traffic as the road was blocked.

“A man was driving and they were on their way back from a funeral in Brighouse.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A Mercedes and a Hyundai have been involved in a collision at 5.15pm on Keldregate.

“No one was seriously injured.”
