DANGEROUS furniture was seized in a raid by police and trading standards staff at a travellers' site in Drighlington.

Thirty items were later tested and found to be highly flammable.

West Yorkshire trading standards service said the operation was mounted after complaints about furniture being sold from the back of vans.

A large number of roadwork signs and cones were also taken from the site.

Much of the seized furniture - made in Poland - was found to fail British safety laws.

One buyer paid £450 for a suite and was told a five-year guarantee would come by post in the next 14 days.

The address and phone number left by the seller were bogus and the suite turned out to be faulty.

Martin Wood, West Yorkshire trading standards chief officer said: "When we found that the furniture was being delivered to the site, we knew we had to act quickly to remove it from the market."
