FURIOUS parents have hit out after their toddler walked out of a nursery without anyone noticing.

Jamie Cox, three, was found on a railway station platform.

Another three-year-old who left was found on a flyover above a ring road.

Jamie's parents Patrick and Katie said they were appalled when they realised conflicting stories had been told by staff at Flatts Nursery School in Dewsbury.

Patrick said: "I have lodged a written complaint in which I want certain questions answering.

"I want to know why the police were not contacted immediately, why Katie wasn't contacted immediately, how they got out of the school and for how long."

Patrick said: "We can't get any help from Jamie because his speech hasn't developed properly so he can't tell us. He also wouldn't be able to tell anyone he was lost. We don't even know if the two boys were missing at the same time because you would expect them to be found together.

"One of the staff said to me that he wasn't in any danger.

"How stupid a comment is that when there are high speed trains going through there?"

The couple have taken Jamie out of the school and are re-arranging their work schedules to look after him.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said staff will take more precautions.

She said: "Two children slipped out of a gate which had been blown open at Flatts Nursery School in Dewsbury at 12.15pm after a teacher, who was about to lock it after lunch, was distracted for 30 seconds by a colleague.

"Staff immediately went out to look for them and they were both found by 12.40pm."

Dewsbury Labour MP Shahid Malik said: "I have written to the council expressing my serious concern over the incident and will be meeting the Director for Children and Young People, Alison O'Sullivan, on Friday.

"To my mind it is only down to good fortune that no serious incident occurred involving the toddlers."
