A TRADER has been enraged by new street repairs - only four days after council officials promised a ban on more roadworks.

Protesters were celebrating their victory over BT last week after it promised to stop roadworks in Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, in the run-up to Christmas.

The company was set to cause road chaos by laying a new phone line to a new housing development.

After an hour-long meeting between Kirklees councillors, campaign leaders and BT officials it was decided to postpone the works until the new year.

But Royston Rogers, a member of Holme Valley Parish Council, saw red on Monday when a sign went up announcing pavement repairs by a pedestrian crossing near the Royal Oak at Netherthong, on the approach to Holmfirth.

The sign says the work is going to start on November 20 and last for one to two weeks at the junction of Huddersfield Road, Miry Lane and Thong Lane.

Mr Rogers said: "To say I'm angry is an understatement.

"We had a meeting on Wednesday with Highways and they said they were not going to do any more.

"I came into work this morning and Kirklees had put up a sign saying they were doing the pavement!

"They never bothered to consult me or talk to the town council - they just slapped this sign up."

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: "The advance works notice sign showing pavement repairs was incorrect. The work needed is actually in the road.

"A new crossing has been built and it is essential for it to be brought into use as soon as possible.

"This work is planned to be done over two evenings when there will be minimal traffic disruption. As such it is unlikely to affect Christmas business.

"The road surface needs to be treated with high skid resistant material before the crossing is brought into use. As the tarmac surface is poor, this needs repairing before this other material is put down."

He said councillors had been aware of the proposed work.
