THE sight of 600 children doing judo moves for a dance was a sight to behold.

But Golcar schoolchildren were aiming to become world record breakers.

Hundreds of children filled the playing field of Beech Junior School at 1pm yesterday as part of Big Dance 2012.

It’s an Olympic-themed dance which involves moves from the sporting world.

Beech pupils were joined by children and teachers at St John’s CE School, Golcar JIN, and parents and children from Golcar, Cowlersley and Milnsbridge Children’s Centre, all part of the Golcar Village Family of Schools.

Sarah Peacock, PE coordinator at Beech School, said: “It was a five-minute dance routine with an Olympic theme.

“It takes moves from Olympic sports, so there’s rowing, cycling, swimming, judo and everything else.

“We trained 12 year 6 pupils and they led the dance so the children could follow them, and in preparation PE this half term had been geared towards this.

“And it’s been great because the children have been able learn about all of the Olympic sports and identify them for the dance. It’s been fantastic, the children have really loved it.”

Schools all over the country have pledged to take part in the record-breaking attempt and the Golcar Village Family of Schools were dancing in the school field come rain or shine.

They were supported by Waves Daycare Centre and Shaw Pallets in Slaithwaite, who helped fund stages for the lead dancers.

Nationally there needs to be more than 264,188 people taking part in the Guinness World Record attempt for the Largest Dance Routine, to beat the previous record-holders in the Netherlands.

Numbers will be counted over the coming days and the world record will be decided in June.
