TWO policewomen were treated in hospital after they were attacked by a gang as they made arrests in Brighouse.

The thugs, who police believe may be linked to a robbery, emerged from two cars and set upon the officers dealing with a car crash at High Street at about 9pm on Sunday.

The policewomen were taken to Calderdale Royal Infirmary suffering from cuts and bruises, but later released after treatment.

A gun, some cash and a knife were recovered at the Brighouse scene.

The drama began when a red Nissan car hit a parked car.

As police arrived, two people fled from the Nissan, but police arrested a man and a woman in the back of the car.

One was handcuffed and they were trying to handcuff the other when they were set upon by about 10 people.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "It is believed the group came from two other cars which were possibly in convoy with the red Nissan before it collided with the parked vehicle.

"The group assaulted two female police officers and helped the two people who had been detained to escape."

One of them was still wearing the handcuffs.

The attackers are thought to be mainly African-Caribbean men and women.

One of the other cars they were travelling in was a silver or blue Rover.

Police appealed to anyone who saw the incident or the cars.

The spokeswoman said:

"It is possible the incident may be connected to a report of a robbery in Brighouse that evening."
