A KIRKHEATON woman is warning pensioners to be on their guard after three men posing as Kirklees Council workmen ransacked her house.

The men arrived on her doorstep claiming to have been sent from the council to carry out essential repair work.

They had no identification on them and when the 56-year-old refused them entry they became aggressive and barged past her into her home on Moorside Road.

Two of the bogus workmen searched rooms upstairs before returning with a black bag that appeared to have items in it. The other man attempted to break into a cupboard downstairs, but was unsuccessful.

They left the woman’s house after about 10 minutes, frightened off by her two dogs.

The woman, who suffers from epilepsy, said that she believes that the men took advantage of her vulnerability as it was clear she was in ill health when she answered the door.

She said: “I want to let people know what happened to me because these men may still be out there targeting other people.

“Others, especially vulnerable and elderly people, may be taken in by them.

“People should be careful when they answer their doors and make sure they check for identification.”

The men are described as fair, tall at about 5ft 11ins, and thin. They were quite smartly dressed and two were aged in their 20s and 30s while the third was aged about 50. All three had strong Northern Irish accents.

Police are investigating the incident which happened on August 20.
