THREE masked men fled empty-handed after trying to hold up a Milnsbridge filling station last night.

All three ran from the Jet filling station in Scar Lane when they were challenged by a cashier and a second man inside the shop.

And in his haste to get away, one of the robbers tripped and fell before running off with his companions towards Sycamore Avenue.

Police said the raid was at 9.48pm. Three men, wearing balaclava masks, entered the garage shop.

One stayed at the door holding it open while a second, brandishing a knife, vaulted the counter.

He threatened the cashier and demanded money but another man in the shop intervened and the robbers fled.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact the robbery team on 0845 6060606.
