A THIRD of garages admit to inflating the time it takes to carry out repairs, according to investigation findings.

Of 125 garages knowingly questioned by trained engineers at warranty company Warranty Direct, 33% were willing to charge more than manufacturer's official repair times.

The figure jumped to nearly 70% when 12 of the garages were paid mystery visits by a member of the public. One garage quoted 16 hours for a six-hour job.

The engineers' research found one garage quoting two hours on a 30-minute job to fix an oil leak.

The additional labour added £52.50 to the final bill.
