FIRE threatened an electricity sub-station in Huddersfield at the weekend.

A householder in Longley Road, Lowerhouses, started two garden waste bonfires on Saturday afternoon.

Both measured about three metres square.

One was just four metres from the sub- station.

Leading Firefighter Dave Chadwick, from the Huddersfield station, said: "The problem was that it was far too close to a rather large hedge.

"There was also the sub-station just past the hedge.

"People don't realise just how much heat these fires give off.

"A week or so ago, when we had the hot weather, we may have had a very different scenario," he added.

A worried neighbour called firefighters at about 2.15pm.
