HUDDERSFIELD gardeners have been taking lessons in how to cultivate their crops.

A training day on how to get the best out of allotments was held on Saturday on land near the Taylor Hill annex of Huddersfield Technical College, at Close Hill Lane.

An expert from the Alternative Technology Centre, in Hebden Bridge, gave expert advice on topics such as soil treatment and pest control.

The gardeners are pictured learning with (front, from left) Susy Feltham, of the Alternative Technology Centre, and course tutors Clare Christian and Sue Leffman.

The event was organised by the Environment Alliance, a non- profit-making company that promotes the use of open spaces and woodland.

Anyone who has a plot on one of Kirklees' 111 allotment sites could apply for a place.

Clare Christian, of the Environmental Alliance, said the event was a success and ideal for people struggling to get started.
