A Marsh man who sent abusive and racist text messages to his former partner has appeared in court.

Gary Scott, of The Lighthouse in New Hey Road, Marsh, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He pleaded guilty to sending by means of a public electronic communications network texts and phone calls that were grossly offensive.

These were sent to the 40-year-old’s ex between February 21 and 25.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “These were racist in context on occasions and she generally found them offensive.”

Scott also made phone calls to her and on February 24 sent a number of texts between 10.30am and 1pm.

Mr Bozman said: “Several of these were abusive and derogatory and one said ‘Go die you n*****’.”

Ben Tighe, mitigating, said that had been issues regarding Scott’s contact with his two children.

He added: “He has no recollection of making these phone calls and being abusive.

“He’s quite shocked at the content of the messages.”

Magistrates sentenced the production line worker to a 12 month community order including 20 days of activities.

He must also pay £165 fine, £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.

Magistrates granted an indefinite restraining order banning Scott from contacting his ex or going to her Primrose Hill home.
