ROADS had to be closed today after gas was found leaking in Dewsbury.

The loud hissing at 4am was traced to a small brick-built main gas pressure reduction station on Healds Road.

The station reduces the pressure so gas can be piped into homes.

Sub-officer Charlie Coates, of Dewsbury Fire Station, said: "There was a very strong smell of gas in the area and it was a very still night so it was not blown away.

"Healds Road was sealed off at both sides of the leak, along with its junction with Halifax Road.

"We were considering evacuating residents when gas engineers arrived and said they could deal quickly with the problem."

The leaking pipe was fixed within 15 minutes.
