WORK on a new gas main will mean disruption for drivers.

Northern Gas Networks is to start work on a £136,000 investment project that will protect the long-term safety and reliability of Crosland Moor’s gas supply.

The main being replaced is a large diameter pipe and is the area’s ‘feeder gas main’ which supplies gas to thousands of people.

Around one kilometre of old metal mains will be replaced with a 400mm modern plastic version in a move that will safeguard gas supplies to the area for decades to come.

The new pipe will be laid on St Thomas Road, Pear Street, Blackmoorfoot Road, Clement Street, Mill Street and part of Manchester Road.

Work gets under way on March 15 and is expected to take around seven-and-a-half months to complete.

Work will be carried out in three phases.

The first phase covers Blackmoorfoot Road from its junction with Park Road to the junction with Manchester Road. It is expected to take around 18 weeks to complete.

The second phase is expected to get under way in late July and relates to work on Manchester Road from its junction with St Thomas’ Road to the junction with Longroyd Lane. This is expected to take around six to seven weeks to complete. This section of the job has been planned to coincide with the school holidays to help minimise disruption.

Phase three starts in early September and covers work on Manchester Road from its junction with Blackmoorfoot Road to its junction with Springdale Avenue. This is expected to take around six weeks to complete.

There will be traffic signals for some parts of the work and drivers have been told to expect delays.
