A HUDDERSFIELD man will wear a Harry Potter outfit this weekend to run for Team Macmillan in the Great North Run.

Gerry Beamond will be among 47,000 starters in the UK's biggest running event at 10am on Sunday.

He hopes his fancy dress will generate a lot of interest and amusement among supporters, to help raise even more than the £2,500 sponsorship he earned for Macmillan Cancer Relief in the London Marathon earlier this year.

Mr Beamond, neighbourhood services manager for Kirklees Council, is a committee member of the Holmfirth Branch of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

He aims to complete the 13.1 mile half-marathon from Newcastle via Gateshead to South Shields in a respectable time, but has no aspirations to be one of the leading runners.

Anyone who wants to support his efforts should contact Bob Riley, treasurer of the Holmfirth committee, on 01484 683211.
