ONE of Britain's most generous businessmen is to give a lecture in Huddersfield.

Colin Potter, of Gosport, Hampshire, will speak on June 8 at a lecture sponsored by Huddersfield University Business School Enterprise Network and by the West Yorkshire Manufacturing Excellence Club.

Mr Potter, 55, hit the headlines last year when he sold communications company Uniworld for £10m - and gave £2m to the company's staff.

Each employee received £5,000 for every year of service.

In Huddersfield, Mr Potter will speak about his latest venture, ProposalGENie.

He owns 40% of the start-up sales software company and is confident that it will turn over more than £25m in three years.

However, Mr Potter will not see a penny of the profit, as he is giving it all to charity. He hopes to be giving more than £1m a year to worthy causes.

Mr Potter, who lives in a four- bedroom home with wife Barbara and drives a Volvo, said: "I don't need the money. I was fortunate when we sold the other company.

"We have a nice lifestyle. All I wanted was to prove I could do it and have financial security.

"I've done that and now it's about trying to give something back. There are so many needy causes and there's never enough money.

"I am doing this purely to give money away and because I love the excitement of building a business."

The lecture in Huddersfield University's Canalside West building starts at 7.15pm.

Admission is free, but tickets are required. To get one, phone Glenys Smith on 01484 473765.
