A FORMER swimming teacher has made it 100 not out.

George Holmes, of Wessen Court sheltered housing, Marsden, who taught scores of Huddersfield youngsters to swim and gave up only eight years ago, has celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.

He was born in Rotherham but moved to Huddersfield with his six brothers and sisters when his father took a job with the police.

In the Second World War he was stationed in the Middle East.

He started his working life in mills in the area but later moved to work at the mortuary at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

As a young man George was an impressive athlete and dedicated swimmer.

His niece Margaret Hopper said : "He enjoyed the day and is still very fit for his age."
