NHS bosses are encouraging children and their families to have a healthy half-term holiday.

School is out for thousands of children in Kirklees this week and the time off can provide an opportunity for the whole family to get some exercise in the fresh air.

Local health officials say that playing on swings, roundabouts, slide and just running around in the park can make a real difference to a child’s health.

Paul Johnstone, regional director for public health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “There are lots of ways people can get some exercise whilst having fun during the holidays.

“We have some of the best parkland in the country so why not go for a walk or go cycling. You could also take the family swimming or even ice-skating.”
