YOUNGSTERS are urged to get hooked on fishing - not drugs or crime - with the launch of West Yorkshire Police's annual fishing competition.

The event was started 11 years ago by force photographer David Speight and now attracts entries from across the country.

This year's competition will be on Saturday, August 7, along the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal at Horbury, near Wakefield.

Wakefield Angling Club has loaned the venue free. It is the top lock above the Navigation pub, beyond Horbury Bridge.

Mr Speight said: "I have been a keen fisherman for many years and began the competition to encourage youngsters to devote some of their time to something constructive and enjoyable.

"Fishing gives them a healthy and interesting activity to focus on, rather than be tempted by others into crime or anti-social activities.

"Over the years the event has become a great family day out."

The competition has 180 places available and categories are under-18 and under-15. There is a special trophy and prize for under-eights.

Last year's winners in each category received fishing poles worth about £500. Other prizes are also on offer.

Mr Speight is keen to hear from anyone who would like to sponsor the event. Phone Anne Shaw on 01924 292245 for an application form.
