GIANTS fans are being inspired to get fit by their heroes.

The players are supporting a new programme encouraging their male fans to tackle their unhealthy habits and convert to a fitter way of life.

The scheme, Get Fit with the Giants, is run in conjunction with primary care trust NHS Kirklees, and begins on Tuesday, February 7, at The Zone leisure facility on St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield.

The programme will use some rugby league ideas to encourage men to make changes to their lifestyles and improve their health and fitness.

Dr Judith Hooper, director of public health for NHS Kirklees and Kirklees Council, said: “The Giants are fantastic role models. They are at the peak of physical fitness and lead healthy lifestyles so they can be at the top of their game and perform for the team and their fans.

“By involving the players and using some of the motivational techniques used by the Giants, those taking part in the programme should succeed in making positive changes to improve their health.”

An introductory session will allow people wanting to take part to pick areas they are interested in and the programme will be planned around their ideas with some sort of physical activity each week.

The programme has received positive responses so far and looks to bring together a group of men to work together as a team to achieve goals and take part in training sessions that will be led by a coach.

Former player Robbie Hunter-Paul, the club’s new business development manager. said: “It’s a great idea and the Giants are fully behind the programme.

“It’s much easier to make changes to your life if you work together, train together and encourage each other as a team.”

Robbie will give an inspirational talk and the exercises will be led by the Giants’ community development team.

Duncan Henderson, a dedicated Giants fan from Slaithwaite, recently lost three stones following a programme of healthy eating and activity.

“Having lost the weight I feel so much better than I did before,” he said.

“I would have loved the chance to take part in the Get fit programme as it would have offered the support and motivation to keep going.”

Get fit with the Giants will run on Tuesdays from 6pm – 8pm at the Zone until April 24.
