GIANT pumpkins and impressive vegetables were showcased at the first ever Longwood Village Show.

The show, launched to boost community spirit, featured a host of competitions including pumpkin growing, cake baking, jam, flowers and other handicrafts.

Chris Marsden took the pumpkin title with his weighing in at a massive 19kg.

Show champion was Ken Battye who notched up the highest overall points total with four first places and a second.

Organiser Barney Harle said the show had been a roaring success with 154 entries from 64 people – 35 of whom won prize money.

The event, sponsored by Kirklees Council and the Colne Valley Garden Centre, also proved the strength of Longwood Allotment growers’ skills as the overall first, second and third place winners all came from the site. In all 30 pumpkins were entered, ranging from 600g to the mega 19kg winner.
