A boxing club is hoping to deliver a knock-out blow to rival groups in an online vote for cash.

Linthwaite-based Gladiators Boxing Club – which boasts rising star Tyrone Nurse among its ranks – has been shortlisted for a share of £80,500 from Skipton Building Society’s Grassroots Giving fund.

Just over 300 community groups – including Family Forum Birkby and Paddock and Incredible Edible Brighouse – have been shortlisted.

However only 161 groups will receive a £500 donation and those successful will be decided by a public vote.

Gladiators is a community sports club, running for almost 10 years, which helps anyone over the age of four learning boxing skills, improving their fitness and confidence levels.

Many young people come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the club wants to use any money to buy equipment to encourage parents to stay while their children are training, helping bring the community together.

The club also wants to buy extra weights and gloves for children who cannot afford them.

Club secretary Lee McGuire said: “This donation would go a long way to helping all our members.”

Family Forum Birkby and Paddock is run by a group of women who want to bring families together, reduce isolation and boost health, well-being and education.

Incredible Edible Brighouse encourages people to grow their own food and helps promote healthy eating and an understanding of good nutrition.

The group would buy gardening equipment.

Treasurer Sandra Edwards said: “At Incredible Edible Brighouse, we grow food for the community organically, with no air miles and totally environmentally friendly.

“This funding would enable us to grow more produce for the benefit of our whole community.”
