HUDDERSFIELD will be a market town for the next two months.

September and October have been branded ‘market months’ in Kirklees.

There will be a Continental flavour when the German and Dutch markets make a return to New Street from today.

Dutch cheese stalls, German sausages, pancakes and a beer garden are among the attractions at the four-day event.

It comes to an end on Sunday when shoppers will also be able to sample what’s on offer at the farmers’ market at the open market on Brook Street.

The market, now in its fourth month, is open 9am to 1pm.

There is also the Sunday market in the Towngate car park, Holmfirth.

And Holmfirth market hall will then play host to a farmers’ market on Sunday, September 16.

The following weekend it also hosts the Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival.

Organised by Holme Valley Business Association and Kirklees Council, the festival will this year welcome traders from across Yorkshire and as far afield as London.

The German and Dutch market will feature, as will the craft market.

Back in Huddersfield town centre, the Town Crier Competition takes place on Saturday September 29.

Hosted by Kirklees Markets Crier Vic Watson, the competition welcomes town criers from across the country.

Starting at Queensgate Market, the criers will parade through the town centre at 10am towards the open market.

October sees the return of Dewsbury’s famous onion fair and Cleckheaton’s farmers’ market on Saturday, October 6.

The Holmfirth Sunday market and Huddersfield and Holmfirth farmers’ markets will also continue throughout the month.

Clr Ken Sims, Cabinet member for regeneration said: “The amount of activity in our towns and markets is tremendous and Kirklees Council is now one of the largest and most successful market authorities in the country.

“We continue to invest in the long term future of our markets and work closely with our market traders and community groups to lead the way on events in our town centres.

“I am delighted to be able to say that Kirklees really is a great place for markets and events.”
