A VILLAGE will today come to a standstill to honour its fallen hero.

The funeral of Lance-Cpl Graham Shaw, killed in action on February 1, will be held in his home village of Golcar. Hundreds of mourners are expected to join tributes to the 27-year-old soldier killed in a bomb blast.

Lance-Cpl Shaw, 27, (pictured) will be laid to rest in Golcar churchyard after a funeral service with full military honours in St John’s Church.

His parents, Russ and Karen, will be joined by many family members and friends at the service, to be conducted by the Vicar of Golcar, the Rev Martin Crompton.

Many roads in Golcar will be closed from 10am until 5pm, with parking restrictions in place.

Main roads to be closed are Town End, Church Street, Knowle Road and Scar Lane (from its junction with Sycamore Avenue).

Other roads affected are: North Drive, East Street, Taylor Street, Heathfield Road, Woodville Avenue, James Street, Ramsden Street, Arthur Street, Knowle Branch Road, Stanley Lane, Manor Road, Deal Lane, Carr Top Lane, Cliffe Ash, Manor Road and Bobbin Close.

Metro, the body for West Yorkshire buses, has negotiated diversions in Golcar.

They are: Services 301 & 302 will operate via Greenway, Sycamore Avenue and Leymoor Road to Town End in both directions. Services 303 & 304 will operate via Greenway, Sycamore Avenue and Leymoor Road to Town End and then on their normal route. Services 394 & 395 will operate via Britannia Road.
