A VILLAGE is getting a £450,000 makeover.

Work is currently taking place in Golcar on much-welcomed improvements to the street setting.

And workers are breaking away from the controversial Chinese paving of St George’s Square by laying high-quality Yorkshire stone in the village.

They are also making steps to enhance the setting around the war memorial.

Golcar councillor Andrew Marchington welcomed the work and said: “This will be an important investment in Town End, making it safer and more attractive for everyone who goes there.”

The work is being carried out after a public consultation earlier this year in which many residents gave their views on what improvements they would like to see in Golcar.

The scheme aims to improve road safety and street furniture and create open space and a focal point within the village.

Grants of up to £5,000 were made available for businesses to make improvements to their own shop fronts and premises.

Work being carried out includes:

Existing tarmac is being replaced with Yorkshire flags, setts and kerbs.

Pedestrian safety is being improved with double yellow lines outside the Co-op on Town End.

Jubilee Square will become a focal point with new street furniture and an enhanced setting around the war memorial.

More car parking spaces at the Town End car park.

Improved street lighting in keeping with the Conservation area will be added.

A public information board with notices of local events will be erected.

The work started on Monday and will continue throughout the summer.

It is expected to be complete by the end of October.

Margaret Ramsbottom, from Town End Post Office, said: “It seems like quite a nice idea.

“Overall we should end up with more parking spaces and there will be some outside the Post Office too.

“I think more parking spaces will benefit customers which I think everybody would welcome.

“It will be nice to see the area tidied up and looking much better.”

Council officials are asking that people do not park at Town End while the work is taking place during the day.
