BIRKBY Infants School has the golden touch - and that's official.

For it has just been awarded a Kirklees Healthy School Gold standard.

It is the first infants school in Kirklees to be given the award.

To be successful, the Blacker Road school had to look at ways of developing its PE curriculum, healthy eating, and lessons on wellbeing.

The PE programme has now been extended to include after-school and lunchtime club activities.

There are more classroom discussions about the importance of healthy lifestyles. Also, what the children eat is monitored closely.

The school's green plan, to encourage children to walk to school, is also being looked at.

To celebrate winning the award a special assembly was held, at which the certificate was presented by Kirklees Healthy Schools co-ordinator Alison Yates.

At the assembly, pupils took part in performances, including street dancing, gospel singing, and songs about healthy eating.
