A COUPLE who met when they were teenagers have celebrated their golden wedding.

Gordon and Margaret Wood, of Croftlands, Newsome, met when they lived in Lowerhouses in the early 1950s.

They both had a love of dancing and were regulars at the Co-operative Dance Hall in New Street.

Mrs Wood, 70, said: "We did all our courting there. We would go dancing at the Co-op a lot in those days - but be back home for 10pm."

After Mr Wood, 75, left the Royal Army Medical Corps the couple got married at Huddersfield Register Office. They are pictured now and on their wedding day.

"We met, got on and 50 years later we are still happily married," said Mrs Wood.

After leaving the forces Mr Wood was an engineer at David Brown Gears, of Lockwood, and DB Tractors in Meltham. He also worked at Thomas Broadbents in Huddersfield. He then spent 25 years as caretaker at All Saints' High School at Bradley Bar.

The couple have two sons, Stephen, 50, and Robert, 48, who both live in Cape Town, South Africa. Mr and Mrs Wood often visit their sons and three grandchildren and are planning another holiday in South Africa next year.
