A COUPLE who met as the church clock struck midnight on Christmas Eve have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

David and Irene Palmer, from Hall Bower, Newsome, met as teenagers while singing in a carol concert at the former Mount Tabor church in Birstall in 1957.

Three years later they married and have since spent 50 happy years together.

On Saturday David and Irene celebrated the milestone with their four children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Irene, 67,said her husband David, 69, was very laid-back and they made a good match.

They are both members of Bower Hall Athletic Club where Irene is the president.

After her children started school Irene trained as a teacher and worked at Lowerhouses Junior School.

David was an engineer at David Browns Tractors and later became a painter and decorator.

The father-of-four also worked as a youth leader in Slaithwaite.
