THE ecstatic dad of Olympic gold medalist Nicola Adam’s returned to Huddersfield after watching his daughter storm to victory.

Innocent Adams, 59, who lives in Marsh with Nicola’s step mum Verna, had a ringside seat to watch Nicola make history as the first woman to achieve a gold medal in the flyweight boxing final.

But Nicola has been so caught up in the media spotlight since sealing her victory 16-7 against China’s world number one Ren Cancan, that Innocent only got to see her briefly at 11.30pm after the fight on Thursday.

Innocent told the Examiner: “I am over the moon. It was phenomenal.

“I knew she could do it from the start. I am so proud of her. I only got to see her for about 30 seconds after the win and we had our photos taken.

“I texted her this morning to check she was okay and she said thanks.

“I’ve no idea when she will next be home as there is so much going on.

“She had been interviewed lots and it’s unreal to see her on TV.

“It hasn’t really sunk in.

“We will have a celebration with family this weekend and I am going to Leeds to see the golden post box and buy some stamps.”

Speaking of his daughter’s dedication he added: “It has been challenging at times and she was also fighting for women’s boxing to come to the forefront like it has.

“She is now an ambassador and an inspiration for women boxers everywhere.”

His wife Verna, and Nicola’s stepbrother Gareth watched the final alongside family and friends at The Lime Bar in Huddersfield.

Nicola’s elated mother Dee, 52, and brother Curtis, 24, of Leeds, also said there was never any doubt.

Dee said: “I am absolutely proud. Words just can not describe it.”
