A COUPLE who have raised thousands of pounds for charity are celebrating their golden wedding.

Carlton and Mary Mellor were married at Thurstonland Church on February 6, 1960.

They had met through friends at a dance at the village drill hall, shortly after Mr Mellor was demobbed from the RAF.

The couple made their home Holmfirth, eventually settling in Cartworth Road.

Mr Mellor served in Malta for three years as an armourer with the Maintenance Unit.

He later worked as a baker at Mettricks in Holmfirth for 25 years before working for Holmfirth Cakery. Mrs Mellor started her working life in textile mills before joining the Co-op as a shop assistant in stores in Thurstonland and Brockholes.

She later joined her husband working at Holmfirth Cakery.

The couple both play for the Yorkshire Traction band at Honley.

They stage many events to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mr Mellor has been chairman of the Holmfirth support group for 19 years and the couple have raised thousands by organising events, ranging from charity collections at Holmfirth Art Week to bungee jumps.

The couple celebrated their special day with a meal at Meltham Golf Club with family including their three children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
