RETIRED joiner Donald Crowther and his wife Doreen have celebrated their golden wedding.

The couple, of Heaton Drive, Kirkheaton, met when Mr Crowther came to mend Mrs Crowther’s office desk when she worked in the borough engineers office in Huddersfield town centre.

The couple married at St Barnabas’ Church in Crosland Moor.

Mr Crowther, 75, worked for Huddersfield Borough Council as a joiner and then went on to teach woodwork and crafts for 25 years at St John Fisher Catholic High School in Dewsbury. He then ran his own joinery business for 10 years before retiring.

The couple have one daughter, who lives in Canada, and who the couple have visited several times, two sons and three grandchildren.

They celebrated with a family party at Upper Hopton Club where Mr Crowther has been a member for 30 years and president for 23 years. He was also secretary of the Kirheaton darts and dominoes league for 15 years.

Mrs Crowther enjoys gardening and sewing and has been a member of Huddersfield Flower Club for 25 years and is currently its secretary.
