A HUDDERSFIELD couple who have moved to Cyprus returned home to celebrate their golden wedding with family.

Gordon and June Stephenson were back at their son Paul’s home at Taylor Hill Road, Taylor Hill, following four days in Dubai and a cruise around the Arabian Gulf to mark their half-century together.

The couple lived in many homes in Huddersfield before moving from Holmfirth to Lincolnshire 11 years ago and then on to Kayalar in northern Cyprus four years later.

They now enjoy a relaxed retirement in the sunshine of Cyprus where they take part in classic car rallies in their 1966 Morris Minor convertible.

Most evenings Gordon, 73, who worked as a plumber and property developer in Huddersfield, enjoys reading the Examiner online.

June, 69, said: “One of our hobbies is car rallying. It is brilliant to drive with the top down in the sunshine in Cyprus – provided it is not too hot.

“Gordon wouldn’t have anything to do with the computer before we left, but now we are in Cyprus he spends half his evenings on the Examiner website.”

As a young woman June worked as a seamstress making children’s clothes for James Jordan at Lord Street. The couple met at a dance at Venn Street and were married at St James’ Church, Rawthorpe. They have five children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their golden wedding with a family meal at the Nag’s Head, Ainley Top.
