A TRIP to the cinema sparked a romance that has lasted more than half a century.

David Mannifield spotted the woman that would become his wife while out with friends at Skelmanthorpe’s Savoy Cinema.

Aged 16, he plucked up the courage to have a word and the rest is history.

The couple have now celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

And it was a double celebration as they hosted a joint-party with their eldest daughter Julie, who was celebrating her silver wedding anniversary.

David married Kathleen at Centenary Methodist Church, Denby Dale, on June 22, 1963.

The couple have remained in the Denby Dale area and David has worked in coal mining, steel works and engineering.

Kathleen gave up work to have their three children, but worked as a carer at a residential home later in life.

They now have eight grandchildren and are enjoying retirement.

David said: “It’s been great, we’ve always got on.

“The main thing is we tend to agree on most things.

“Diplomacy and tact are the key!”
