An inquiry is underway after a police drama which shut a Gomersal road.

It is understood a marked police car, with lights flashing, had tried to stop a suspected stolen car.

The car, a black Ford Mondeo, was said by witnesses to have sped away when the driver spotted the passing police car.

Followed by the Ford Fiesta police car, the Mondeo - believed to contain two men - failed to stop at a junction and ploughed into an oncoming silver BMW 1 Series.

The smash happened at around 2.50pm yesterday as the Mondeo turned right out of Woodlands Road straight into the path of a BMW coming up Spen Lane.

A witness told the Examiner how two young men in the Mondeo fled the stricken vehicle and ran off in separate directions.

Police caught one man and are looking for a second.

Paramedics were called and the driver of the BMW was treated at the scene. He had neck injuries.

The Anthony family whose home overlooks the crash scene saw the drama unfold.

Lucy, aged 11, told the Examiner how she was looking out of her bedroom window when she saw the Mondeo, followed by the police car, come towards the end of Woodlands Road.

“I saw two people running from the car,” said Lucy. “They went in different directions, one was chased by a policeman.”

Lucy’s mum Melanie, 43, said: “It’s quite shocking. It could have been so much worse.”

Karen Hunt, 56, of Woodlands Road, said she saw the police car with lights flashing going past her window and heard a “big bang.”

“As far as we know the police car was following the Mondeo,” she said. “I saw its lights flashing as it came past my window and then there was a big bang.”

Police at the scene recovered several small items from the Mondeo and put them in evidence bags.
