A HUDDERSFIELD school has received a mixed report from Government inspectors.

An Ofsted team recently visited Ashbrow Infant and Nursery School and Early Excellence Centre in Sheepridge.

The centre was set up in 1998 and

includes part and full-time day care for children aged up to five. It also includes nursery education for three and four-year-olds, adult education and parents' courses.

Holiday playschemes, a parents and toddlers group, family support and work in the community were not part of the inspection.

The team found the centre had a number of strengths and children and families were very well supported by its services.

Children in the early years unit were very well taught and achieved well.

But much of the teaching in Years 1 and 2 two lacked challenge, especially in English, and pupils did not do as well as they could.

The inspectors said the level of improvement since the school's last inspection in 1996 was unsatisfactory, because standards were still too low in English in Years 1 and 2.

But the school has successfully dealt with other issues, including pupils' personal development, their punctuality and links with parents.

In both the school and the centre children are well behaved and had good attitudes to learning.

Generally, the children who transferred from the children's centre to the school made a good start.

And the standard of work seen in reading, maths and science was a little higher than the recent test results indicated - but were still in the main average or below average.

The curriculum was sound.
