FIRE crews are in line for improved training facilities at their Birkenshaw headquarters.

New classrooms, a weight training room and storage area are all earmarked for the West Yorkshire brigade's Oakroyd Hall complex at Whitehall Road East.

A 1960s smoke-room that simulates the inside of burning buildings will be flattened to make way for the facilities.

A state-of-the-art smoke-room was built at the base about 10 years ago.

A spokesman said: "The new smoke- room is more environmentally friendly and we have really burned the old one to death.

"It was used for firefighting training. Crews go in with breathing apparatus, simulating working round various rooms," he added.

Proposals for the new training area were submitted to Kirklees Council's planning department this week.
