Thirty passengers had to be evacuated after a coach they were travelling in caught fire on the M62.

Three lanes of the motorway were closed yesterday evening after the 56 seater coach went up in flames on the hard shoulder.

Danyelle Vasey was a passenger in her Mum's car, directly behind the coach, when she saw smoke and flames coming out of the coach.

They drove alongside it, beeping their horn and signalling to the coach driver that he needed to pull over.

Along with the other two cars in their convoy, travelling back to Scarborough from a holiday in Blackpool, Danyelle, 22, and her mum pulled over in front of the coach and ran to help the elderly passengers.

She said: "There were 32 elderly people on board, we got them all off and far away for the coach, to a safe place. There were five of us that got on to help the passengers off.

"We rang the fire brigade and police, and stayed there with them until they arrived. We asked if they were all warm enough, and if anyone needed a drink."

Three fire crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at 7.30pm.

They were assisted by firefighters from Rastrick Fire Station.

The fire broke out on the eastbound carriageway between junction 21 (Milnrow) and junction 22 (Rishworth Moor).

A spokesman from Rastrick said that the vehicle was 20% involved in fire and that the fire crews used all of the water available to them to put out the blaze.

All of the passengers who were on a coach trip were evacuated from the vehicle.

An elderly woman was treated for smoke inhalation but no one was seriously hurt.

Greater Manchester Fire Service said that while the exact cause of the fire is unknown, it could be due to a fault in the engine.

The flames had spread to the luggage compartment leaving the vehicle badly damaged.
