An 18-year-old woman has died following a freak accident in Thongsbridge.

Now police are urging witnesses to the tragedy to come forward.

Police said the teenager, named locally as Grace Dyson, was walking along Springwood Road at 6.15pm on Friday when she apparently slipped on the pavement and fell into the road and into the path of an incoming Nissan Cabstar tipper van.

It is thought that Grace may have been trying to put up an umbrella at the time.

She died at the scene, which is close to the playing fields of the Holmfirth High School campus.

The road is used for traffic travelling between Wooldale and Holmfirth.

Police closed it for a time after the accident.

Over the weekend several floral tributes were left near the scene in memory of a young woman who was remembered as “always happy and smiling.”

Her friend Katie Foster, who works at a convenience store on Springwood Road only a hundred yards from the scene, said in a Tweet: “Can’t believe you are gone, Grace Dyson. Such an amazing girl. I’ll miss you so much! RIP. Beautiful. xxx.”

A police investigation is under way.

Det Sgt Carole Greaves, of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “As part of our enquiries we are keen to speak to anyone who either witnessed the collision itself or who believes they saw the vehicle or pedestrian involved immediately prior to the collision.

“Any information should be passed to myself in the Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101.”
