AMAZING artist Sean Thomas has helped youngsters at a Huddersfield school learn to love words, in an unusual way.

He has worked with four and five-year-olds at Christ Church Woodhouse CE school in Deighton.

And they have been using graffiti art to develop their reading and writing skills.

Previously bare stone panels at the school have been transformed with onomatopoeic words like “whiz”, “twirl”, “pop”, “zoom” and “bang.”

And the children have been encouraged to seek inspiration from the artwork and recreate designs in chalk on the playground surface.

Teenager Sean, who would like a career as an illustrator, is studying A levels in business, graphics and psychology at Crossley Heath School in Halifax.

He worked for around six weeks during the summer term with children to create the work.

Sean is a friend of headteacher Jennifer Davies’s daughter Alice.

He completed the project during his Wednesday afternoon “enrichment” time at the school when students get time off from lessons to carry out work of benefit to themselves and the wider community.

Sean also spent time during the summer holidays finishing off the panels.

Mrs Davies said: “We had said for some time that the stone panels in the building were dull and we needed something to brighten them up.

“We also wanted something to decorate them around the theme of words, reading and writing and this seemed a good idea.

“It was great that Sean was prepared to give up his time and the project has inspired and excited the children, particularly the boys, who are now using chalk in the playground to try and further develop the skills they have been taught by Sean.”
