AN adventurous grandmother is getting set to scale one of the world's highest mountains.

Maureen Gaunt, 56, from Hartshead, will brave the dizzy heights of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money for the cerebral palsy charity Scope.

The gruelling five-day trek will see Maureen and fellow fundraisers hike through jungle and snow before reaching the 19,340ft summit.

The intrepid grandmother is in fitness training for the task, going to a gym three times a week.

She joked: "The most exercise I ever get is walking to my car, and I've only just bought my first pair of walking boots."

Maureen hopes to collect £3,000 for the charity.

Anyone wanting to give money to the cause will find Maureen at Brighouse Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's performances of Mack and Mabel at the Civic Hall from March 22-27. She will be on stage and also hold collections in intervals. She will also collect at Brighouse Sainsbury's.
