A NEW grant scheme to encourage people in communities to work together has been launched by Kirklees Council.

The Communities Together grants are aimed at voluntary, faith and community groups.

Grants worth up to £3,000 can be applied for by “not for profit” organisations.

They must increase awareness, understanding and positive interaction, help people get on better, allow people to share activities or interests or get people together for a common purpose.

Community groups, tenants and residents associations and religious and political organisations can also be supported if the grant is to benefit the wider community.

A total of £45,000 is available this year and a pot of £90,000 is available for years two and three.

Applications must be from two or more groups of people working together from different backgrounds or ages.

The different backgrounds can include different ages, heritage, social-economic, or rural/urban backgrounds.

Clr Khizar Iqbal, cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, said: “This will help people of different communities and different walks of life promote positive relationships and interaction.”

The funding was agreed as part of the council budget this year and follows proposals by the Liberal Democrat group.

More information on the grant and the eligibility criteria is available from the Grants and Funding Team on 01484 414824.
