THE great drain robbers have struck again in Huddersfield!

Huddersfield has seen a sudden increase in theft of grates which is putting local road users at risk.

It is the second time this year that a large number of cast-iron drain covers and grates have been stolen.

In recent weeks up to 20 gully grates have been stolen in the Woodman Avenue and Eldon Road area of Bradley.

A councillor is concerned drivers and bikers will be put at risk.

Clr Martyn Bolt, Kirklees Council’s Cabinet member for Highways, said: “The scrap value of the grates is not significant and wouldn’t justify the effort that went into removing them.

“However it puts other road users at significant risk.

“This theft is callous in the extreme because of the dangers to road users, children and cyclists in particular.”

Anyone can report a missing grate by ring-ing the Ross helpline number 0800 7318765.
