A DEIGHTON graveyard has undergone a transformation following a letter exchange in the Examiner.

Volunteers led by the Rev Philip Bee spent the day improving the graveyard at Deighton Road.

Patricia Steadman said: "The achievement was considerable and obvious and the camaraderie and teamwork was inspiring."

She said the work would continue over the next few weeks.

The graveyard is owned by the Methodist Church authorities.

The chapel closed many years ago, owing to falling numbers in the congregation, and after some years of dereliction the building was finally demolished about 20 years ago.

Last month, several people wrote to the Examiner expressing concerns about the state of the graveyard and suggesting it should be tackled after several years of neglect. It contains many old graves, including some of soldiers who died during the World Wars.
