A historic village sing-a-long has announced this year’s event will have a Great War theme.

The Longwood Sing has happened each and every year since 1873, including through both world wars.

It sees crowds gather at Nab End Tower above the Longwood War Memorial for a programme of songs and music.

This year’s sing at 2pm on Sunday, September 14 will feature Golcar Band, organist Dr Geoffrey Lockwood, children from Crow Lane School and the Outlane Singers led by Suzanne Smelt.

Chairman, Charles Ross, said: “The Longwood Sing might have great tradition, but it needs to remain as current for today as the past if it is to keep the community spirit of our residents – it is a special thing that needs to be maintained.

“A group of volunteers come together to coordinate it each year and I am very grateful for their efforts.

“In respect of the year’s centenary of WW1, this time the Sing will raise funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, so there is a theme of compositions from the Great War years alongside the modern.

“There are a couple of changes this year, the start time is 30 minutes earlier so there is more chance to enjoy the tea than having to rush home for the family meal.

“Also, an area underneath the main amphitheatre has been cleared and extra seating has been provided for those who want to join in but feel that the steep steps on the final approach take their breath away.”

Mrs Chris Philip of the Gideon Society, and members of the Golcar RBL will also provide a Benediction to close the ecumenical service.
