AN environmentally friendly vehicle made by a Huddersfield team clocked up an impressive result at the Shell Eco Marathon.

The aim of the event is to travel as far as possible on a gallon of fuel.

Golcar's Team Beaka, managed by Carl Lister, has competed in the race for six years.

It managed an impressive 2,490mpg in this year's event.

The vehicle was powered by a 35cc, four-stroke petrol engine that Mr Lister built in his garden shed.

The winning team, Microjoule, from France, achieved 10,705mpg in the competition at Rockingham Speedway, Corby, Northamptonshire.

They beat their own previous world fuel consumption record by 500mpg.

The aim of the competition, organised by Shell Global Solutions, is to complete seven laps of the oval circuit, using as little fuel as possible but averaging 15mph.

The competition attracts entries from as far afield as Japan, Finland, Belgium and France.
