Huddersfield and Calderdale hospitals have been given a clean bill of health on a new NHS patient safety website.

But Dewsbury and District Hospital has been dubbed as “among the worst” for several categories .

The NHS Choices website now hosts a new safety section including reports on staffing levels, infection control and safety reporting of every hospital in England.

NHS chiefs said it was “a step forward in its commitment to openness and transparency.”

The website allows the public to browse hospitals’ performance over a range of specialities, including cancer and diabetes care.

For overall patient safety both Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital are given the green light for meeting health watchdog standards, assessing blood clots, having safe staffing levels and being open about reporting incidents.

But Dewsbury and District Hospital is flagged as red for failing to meet some watchdog standards.

It is also rated as “among the worst” for being recommended by staff and for open and honest reporting of incidents.

The review revealed a fifth of hospital trusts in England may be covering up mistakes.

The review said this may be a sign of a “poor” safety culture.

Those with lower-than-expected incident reporting, which is widely acknowledged to be a sign of problems, will be followed up by NHS England officials.
