GREENHEAD College is a long-established sixth-form college catering exclusively for students in the 16-19 age range. It is a specialist provider of AS and A level courses, offering a broad range of subjects and subject combinations. In addition, there is a wealth of enrichment activities, generous pastoral and learning support and specialised careers advice.

Situated adjacent to Greenhead Park, the college enjoys a convenient site within easy walking distance of Huddersfield town centre and its bus and railway stations. It occupies attractive and well-maintained buildings with access to modern facilities, equipment and resources.

There are more than 1800 students, who are drawn from Huddersfield and the surrounding area. About two thirds of these come from twelve partner schools in Huddersfield and South Kirklees. The remainder travel daily to the college from other parts of Kirklees and its neighbouring local authorities.

The college is a Beacon College, which regularly features at the top of the national performance tables for sixth-form colleges. All aspects of provision have been judged to be outstanding at their most recent OFSTED inspection. The teaching staff are all subject specialists and highly dedicated professionals committed to providing an outstanding educational experience for their students.

In 1996, the college was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its innovative and effective system of pastoral support. There is a small team of highly trained and dedicated personal tutors with a generous allocation of time to look after the individuals in their care. All students are assigned to a personal tutor who also delivers the wider curriculum, monitors academic progress and provides specialised guidance on application to and survival in higher education or employment.

In excess of 90% of the students progress to higher education and around 30 of these, each year, go to either Oxford or Cambridge universities.

All staff are involved in offering a wide range of enrichment activities which students can opt for either for pure enjoyment or to add breadth to a narrow curriculum vitae. There are many specialised six week courses, longer activities such as the annual Christmas musical production and opportunities, which last for two terms, to play for the many sports teams. In 2000, the enrichment programme also received the recognition of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize.

All first year students have the opportunity to apply for a work-shadowing placement or a project organised by the college and, after the AS examinations in June, nearly 600 students gain experience of the world of work both across the UK and abroad. The college is immensely grateful to the employers who have contributed to the work-shadowing scheme over many years and is always on the lookout for new placements.
