YOUNG scientists were put through their paces in a contest at Huddersfield University.

Three students from Greenhead College competed against students from 19 different sixth-form colleges in the final of the Schools’ Analyst Competition, which has been organised annually by the Royal Society of Chemistry since 1990.

Greenhead College was represented by lower sixth-form students Ellie Bishop, Ashley Sunderland and Rachel Lunn.

The competition was held at the university where students were put through their paces by organiser Brian Woodget.

Competitors were given three hours to analyse a number of unknown solutions, and a further hour in which to outline their findings in a formal report.

Area heats took place in March, making these three students the best chemists in their district. Schools travelled from as far as Londonderry to take part.

The competition was won by the team from Charterhouse, a private school in Godalming, near Surrey.
