MEMBERS of Greenpeace protested outside MP Barry Sheerman’s office over plans to expand Heathrow Airport.

They want the Huddersfield MP to show support to their campaign.

Jeff Rice from Huddersfield Greenpeace said: “We are asking Barry Sheerman to support this campaign and show his commitment to tackling climate change.

“So far he’s been rather quiet on the subject.”

Greenpeace has bought a plot of land in the middle of the proposed 3rd runway site in a bid to beat off the expansion.

But Mr Sheerman said Greenpeace and other environmental groups take what he said was a ‘simplistic’ view on the issue of climate change.

He added he was concerned about the expansion plans, but there should be a comprehensive inquiry into airport expansions and the carbon footprints they leave.

“I would like to see a Commission to properly evaluate air transport in this country,’’ he said.

He said everyone has a role to play, but it is a complex issue with people wanting to jet off on holidays in the sun and business travel bringing a boost to the UK economy.

He added that if airports do not expand, the business travel trade could end up being taken by other countries in Europe as they forge ahead with expansion schemes.
