WORK has started on a £1.6m state-of-the-art health centre at Shepley.

The project, on Jos Lane, is being carried out by Trinity Medical Properties Ltd.

It will feature spacious consulting rooms, large treatment rooms for use by nurses, improved waiting areas and health education facilities.

Accommodation will be provided for health visitors and specialist nursing teams.

In the future, visiting consultants may also be able to use the premises.

The premises will replace the Fieldhead Surgery in Shepley, now occupied by Dr Les Orme and colleagues Dr Richard Buxton, Dr Duncan Shaw and Dr Mary Kempsell.

Dr Orme said: "Our staff and patients have coped well with the inadequacies of our current building for a long time.

"The new centre will provide excellent facilities for modern primary health care into the foreseeable future."

John Chilton, chairman of the GP-led South Huddersfield Primary Care Trust said, "We are delighted with the plans.

"The centre will be one of the finest in the area, offering a wider range of services to our patients in high-quality, modern surroundings."

It is expected to open next May.

The development is part of wider plans to improve primary care and services across the trust's area.

The Fieldhead Surgery site has been sold.
